Pioneer Projects was set up in 1996 by a group of artists previously trading as Celebratory Arts for Primary Healthcare. Its first workspace, Looking Well, was created to serve the needs of Bentham following an arts-led health needs assessment in 1997.
In 2005 the company secured ownership and moved into its current premises, Looking Well Studios, a newly converted former warehouse in the heart of the town.
Since that time services have developed across the Craven district and beyond, although we still play an important role in the community of Bentham including hosting the Bentham Community Library.
Pioneer Projects continues to thrive and extend its unique approach to the art of living across rural communities in the North of England and Internationally.
Pioneer Projects founder Ali Clough was invited to address the Art of Good Health and Wellbeing conference in New South Wales, Australia in 2009. A Little Boxed History is based on that talk. Part 1 reflects the history and development of Ali’s arts and health work up to the formation of Pioneer Projects. Part 2 is the history of Looking Well in Bentham and her Australian work.
