What a wonderful day we had at Settle Victoria Hall for our Summer Celebration! Bringing together nearly 500 people, the day was a joyful celebration of creativity, community and the brilliant people and groups we work with across Craven.
We had a full programme for all ages, beginning with some Early Years singing and music with the fabulous Sally-Anne, followed by a magical musical storytime with Bentham Library.
Our brilliant facilitator Izzie then led a story workshop for young people, using our special story dress to inspire them to create their own tales. There were stories of magic, rivers and wells – and even a rainbow sheep!
Throughout the day, our fantastic Bentham Singing Group, led by Caroline, shared original songs created around our theme of Stories, Colloquialisms and Who We Are. They also performed some favourites from previous sessions, including Butterflies, written by a past member of the group. We were honoured to sing it together in her memory.
In the workshop space, artist Nicky helped people get creative with shoebox theatres and puppets, while our main hall became a wonderful exhibition showcasing work from our groups across Craven. From standing stones and a Rooted in Yorkshire tree to Boggart hands and story shoebox theatres, it was a joy to see so many amazing pieces brought together in one place.
We were also delighted to share the work of our writing group, led by our brilliant volunteer Roger. For 30 minutes, the group performed original poetry and spoken-word pieces exploring Stories, Colloquialisms and Who We Are.
One of the special highlights of the day was the launch of a stop-motion film created by young people from Bentham and North Craven through a heritage project with the Daphne Oram Trust and AMP Music. The group created the film, original song and soundtrack to celebrate the centenary of Daphne Oram and her pioneering work in electronic music. We were thrilled that Daphne’s niece could join us for the special screening!
Outside in the garden, our local folk session brought together community musicians, filling the beautiful summer afternoon with music. Simon, one of our keyworkers, also led a brilliant drumming circle, using rhythm and drums as a fun way to communicate, connect and make music together.
And, of course, we couldn’t finish the day without everyone joining in for a good old-fashioned sing-along with Caroline!
With delicious food and drink provided by Settle Victoria Hall and such a warm atmosphere throughout the gardens and building, it really was a special day. Most importantly, it was a chance to celebrate the creativity, talents and stories of our community.
